Bus Stop Style #1
A low-buy challenge.
Bus Stop Style was born from my never-ending quest to find the perfect outfit. Not the perfect “going out” or workday outfit, but the perfect “I can wear this to walk the dog, then answer emails from the couch, then pick kids up from the bus stop, and then go to dinner” outfit.
To me, “bus stop” represents more than the spot where I greet my kids after school - it symbolizes a public place with low (nonexistent?) style expectations where I still strive to be somewhat presentable (most days?). Not to mention very comfortable. This is the crux of my style quandary - I appreciate presentability but am also extremely tempted by the fraying sweatpants I’ve had for… decades? I’d like to figure out ways to be as cozy and stylish as possible… with stuff I already own.
Along those lines, I also need help with accountability. I don’t have many vices, but do love to double click the side of my iPhone and Apple Pay my way into new clothes. If I were to analyze this habit, I know I’d unearth some stuff. It would probably relate my dysregulated nervous system and/or wanting to “look the part” as I switch between my various roles (board member, soccer coach, fancy luncheon attendee, laundry folder, etc). And - of course - there’s a dash of superficial pleasure in the mix.
But my shopping habit has become less thoughtful and more frequent than it should be. Not good for the environment, my mental health, my bank account, or - frankly - my time. Keeping up with trends is exhausting. Staying stylish is a never-ending task designed to keep us constantly dissatisfied, constantly wanting more, and forever clicking “Buy Now”. This toxic practice seems closely linked to the hustle culture that I don’t want to be part of. Simply put, I want off the ride.
So, consider this my public commitment to a “low-buy” season. I’ll use this series to shop my own closet, highlight outfits (created from clothing I already own), rewear stuff as much as possible, and share any purchases I do make, and why. All with the goal of appreciating what I have, improving the metrics mentioned earlier, and trying to nail down that cozy + presentable vibe that is Bus Stop Style.
Before I go any further, I should shout from the rooftops that I’m not writing this because I think I’m sensationally fashionable. In fact, I’ve happily embraced being basic. My style is derivative, mostly behind the current trends, etc. And that’s fine with me. I mean - honestly - who has the time?! I also don’t really mind what the people in my life wear - in fact, I deeply respect those who care less about clothing than I do. There are far more important things in this world.
But if you feel like joining me for some frivolous, clothing-based escapism, and want to help keep me accountable… read on.
Kindergarten Classroom Volunteer
To me, this feels adequately practical and cute. Layers are key when volunteering in a kinder classroom - you’ll warm up quick wrangling those little kiddos. I also added some fun accessories and shoes because… why not!
Seahawks Viewing Party: (Left) No Kids Party (Right) Cozy Party
If I were at a child-free Seahawks viewing party I would be brave enough to wear white pants with this cute sweater. But, alas, I’m more likely to be found in my old joggers and sweatshirt. Easier to get pizza sauce stains out of those.
Daily Dog Walk - Cold, Dry Weather
I wear some version of this combo at least 6 days a week. I love a fleece pant, waterproof sneaker, and long, light puffer for misty PNW walks. Merino wool tops and socks are also a great choice in the quest to stay warm and dry. Cute dog = bonus points!
Committee Meeting
Occasionally, I need to be taken seriously. And I try to dress the part. I still love a cozy sweater and fun accessories, but feel like the trousers take it all up a notch.
I hope you enjoyed this frivolity! If you’d like links to anything, drop a comment and I’ll send them over. Nothing is sponsored (LOL I feel so lame even typing that) it’s all just stuff I really like.

Love this!! The Patagonia vest is the most PNW piece ever. 👏🏻
Love the fit ideas! I, too, love trying to keep up with the trends. But often find I always reach for the basics in my closet. I have found that a good closet clean out helps jumpstart a “low buy” season. It’s fun to discover what you have in your closet already! And for the record, you’ve got great style!
